I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was nearly 40 years old.

My husband made it most mornings, and I loved smelling it brew. One cold morning, I finally decided to try a homemade version of a coffeehouse drink.

I melted a spoonful of vanilla ice cream in my mug in the microwave. Then I poured and swirled fresh, hot coffee over it. And I’ve been drinking coffee most mornings since!

I’ve transitioned from the melted ice cream version to adding just a little half and half.

Although I’m not sure if I’ll ever be like many of you, including my parents, and “take mine black,” I sure can’t swallow the syrup-laden drinks so popular at our neighborhood coffee shops.

I enjoy trying the seasonal choices at our local coffee huts and truck, but I always remind the barista to cut the normally served sweetness level. And I always order the smallest size…
