The south side of Spartanburg — a predominantly Black community where it takes some residents hours to get groceries using a public bus — won’t be known as a food desert much longer. 

In a matter of weeks, the city expects to unveil the name of the new grocery store that’ll move into the space formerly occupied by a Save-A-Lot on S. Church Street. The new store could be welcoming customers within six months, City Manager Chris Story said at a community meeting Tuesday night.

While the name of the grocery store likely won’t be known until it comes before the city council for a vote, Story gave some never-before-released details.
