SAULT STE. MARIE — Tony Stackpoole will have been serving coffee and pastries to Soo locals for a quarter of a decade on Friday, June 3.

Stackpoole runs the restaurant with his wife, and they have been in business consistently since opening on June 3, 1999. Cup of the Day even stayed open during the entire COVID-19 pandemic without having to close its doors even through staff shortages.

Stackpoole used to work for various restaurants around Sault Ste. Marie until he saw an opportunity to open his own restaurant.

“I had the opportunity with a business partner, she had a beauty salon and the back of the building here,” said Stackpoole. “The front was vacant so I decided to open a coffee shop.”

Then he founded Cup of the Day, an internet café and deli serving coffees, sandwiches, smoothies and soup. While some customers have told him they thought Cup of the Day referred to cups of soup it actually refers to what Stackpoole considers his iconic $1 cup of coffee.
