Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Cafe Rhema in Flint serves up refreshing twist on smoothies

FLINT, MI — These are not your “run of the mill” smoothies.

Cafe Rhema, located at 432 Saginaw St. in downtown Flint, wanted to create smoothies with a little extra kick while staying health conscious for the perfect, refreshing summer concoction.

And they brought it.

With four new delectable drinks bursting with flavor, owner Tiff Sommers wants to help Flint and Genesee County residents beat the heat while satisfying cravings, dancing on taste buds and refueling her customers for their day ahead.

“We wanted to do something unique. These are not your everyday smoothies with one simple flavor. This is not just a mango smoothie. We wanted to add something fun to it. So we added mango, banana, turmeric, ginger, some chia seeds,” Sommers said. “It gives it some spice. These have ingredients that intrigue people to try something new and delicious and fall in love with it.”

And the best part, she said, is they are health conscious. Each smoothie is made with alternative milks to help keep calories down and be mindful of anyone with dairy allergies as well.

Here are the four smoothies ready to order:

• Strawberry Banana with oat milk. “This may be the most simple of them all, as it is also one of, if not the most popular smoothie flavor in the world,” Sommers said.

• Tropical Turmeric is complete with mango, banana, turmeric, ginger, chia seeds and almond milk

• Sweet Greens includes pineapple, banana, kale, spinach, matcha, almond milk and mint

• Bananastasia is made with blueberries, banana, sunflower seed butter, chia seeds and almond milk

The smoothies vary in price between $8.65 and $9.50. There are also options that allow customers to add protein to the drinks, as well as tapioca.

Each smoothie is sweetened with locally-sourced honey from the Flint Farmers’ Market.

“This time of year, people are all about smoothies,” Sommers said. “If you want something cold and something healthy, this is your spot every day of the week.”
